Freehills Patent Attorneys, a premier Australian patent attorney firm, is seeking a talented Trainee Patent Attorney to join the Physics/ Engineering practice group in our Melbourne office.
About the position
As a Trainee Patent Attorney, your day to day work will cross the full spectrum of our clients’ commercial and intellectual property needs. You will liaise with inventors, corporate clients, and international IP firms, conduct searches of the patent landscape, assist in drafting patent specifications, prosecute patent applications from filing to grant, provide patentability and infringement advice and manage patent oppositions (including meeting with experts and drafting submissions).
As part of your continuing development as a Trainee Patent Attorney, you will research developments in intellectual property law, both in Australia and overseas and be given the opportunity to contribute to the firm’s regular publications in this area.
Flexible start date – immediately or any time between now and February 2015.
Training you in a new career
We will fully support your training to become a registered patent attorney through both on the job and formalised training. You will be mentored by leading practitioners, and work on a wide range of client matters whilst undertaking further formal studies. We fund your Masters of Intellectual Property tuition fees, paid study leave and provide a dedicated tutorial program in-house to ensure your success.
Mandatory for this position is a degree in engineering or science with a major in computing or IT. This is essential for the technology area you will be working in.
Candidates must have a strong academic background with at least an honours (ideally First Class Honours) degree.
We are keen to talk with candidates with the following backgrounds:
- University graduates (near or recent) with a combined engineering or science/ law degree, Honours level or higher in science or engineering; OR
- Trainee patent attorneys with 1 - 3 years’ relevant working experience in a patent attorney practice; OR
- engineers with experience working in the IT/ computing industry.
The successful applicant will possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Critical to your success are outstanding analytical skills with a very keen eye for detail.
